The Woo Chang gear coupling is a shaft coupling powered by a sleeve and a crown hub. It conforms to the AGMA standard of the USA and the JIS standard of Japan. The teeth of the hub are machined into crowned gears with three equal sides allowing the coupling to tolerate parallel, angular, and axial misalignment by transmitting power through contact points along a curve (instead of constant surface contact).
The Woo Chang taper grid coupling is torsionally flexible to absorb shock loads and vibration. When an overload occurs during use, the grid breaks and acts as a safety device to prevent damage to the shaft and machine. Also, when serious misalignment occurs due to machinery damage during use, the grid or hub breaks away, halting action and preventing the spread of damage. Vibration reduction more than doubles the service life of mechanical seals, bearings, and other parts. Grid couplings produce excellent power transmission performance with low noise. The grid is manufactured according to industry standards, making it completely interchangeable.
The body consists of two dedicated sprockets with hardened teeth and two-strand roller chains. The sprockets are coupled when the chains are wound around the sprockets, and decoupled with the chains removed. Therefore, transmission power can be coupled or separated without moving the transmission system.

In spite of low weights and mass moments of inertia of the elastomer couplings they are able to transmit high torques. The compact shaft couplings are characterized by a long service life and sound operating characteristics generated by allover machining.

It takes angular misalignment up to 40°, parallel misalignment up to 1/8” or end float up to 5/16” depending upon the size of the coupling and duration of shaft misplacement.
